"Sorh" is an ideal introduction to the work of the depressive BM band Woods
of Desolation: it's a short recording of four tracks and might be
considered a mini-album. After a dreamy and lilting acoustic guitar
introduction, we are plunged straight into a harsh, all-enveloping
environment of blizzard BM guitar noise, a blaring guitar line that
approximates a bugle cry, screeching ghost vocals, thrumming bass and
(later) solemn thumping drums in the far distant background. The mood seems
strongly martial though the lyrics of "The Leaden Sky Torn" suggest the
aftermath of a war in which the dead and dying remain on churned-up and
bloodied soil. WoD go for an all-out attack in this song and keep it up for
nine minutes. "Enshrouded by Solitude" picks up the BM-guitar maelstrom and
stern, severe mood and takes the lot to a different level of melancholy and
sorrow that includes an interlude of clean guitar melody with a slight echo
that enhances the music's doleful nature. The quartet concludes with the
melancholy "Within the Crimson Tide" which in spite of the continuing
acidic guitar showers has an almost elegiac tone.

The music follows a narrative from the last moments of life and its
memories to the point where life fades away and the soul begins a new
     journey...
